Basic Firearms Course Section 2  Specialty Ammunition

Generally for self-defense you will want to use the run of the mill hollow point rather than the so called specialty rounds exulted in the Gun magazines. You already have read that we believe the manufacturer of the hollow point ammunition really isn't important. Another factor to add to the self-defense shooting equation is "What will the Grand Jury make of the type of ammunition you use"?  Most members of a Grand Jury know nothing about firearms, yet your fate whether you will be indited or not is in their hands. If you use a handgun called the "Terminator" and ammunition labeled the "Destroyer" this could be enough to push the Grand Jury over the edge on a Gray area shooting.

We've already discussed the standard hardball - full metal jacket bullet that will pass thru the first body with enough energy to injure another, as well as discussed the hollow point a bullet. Another type of bullet would be a pre-fragmented round manufactured by a few companies. One of these is the " Glazer Safety Slug", the bullet is a hollow metal shell filled with #12 shot. This round is designed for two functions: it makes a rather substantial wound channel and if you miss it will come a part when it hits something solid. The idea of the round is to reduce the possibility of hitting innocents behind the intended target.. Sounds like a good idea unless your intended target is behind something semi-solid>

Approximately 12 years ago a group of 6 young men attempted to hold up our east side store and kill me. They got my primary handgun from me, I got my backup and we exchanged gunfire. The first three rounds in my back 5 shot revolver had been the Glazer safety slug ( I used them to avoid shooting a drunk off a bar stool in the 10th Street Pub should I miss.) I could not get the shooter behind the displays because the Safety Slugs would just come a part. I could not get to them until the last tow rounds which had been hollow points. The good news: when I took out the three windows of the store I didn't hurt any of the new cars in front of the store. The Bad news: I couldn't get to the bad guys either.

All six including the two bleeders were caught and arrested within 3 minutes of the 911 call going in. I had 19 officers from 4 different agencies respond to the call. The two adults in a plea bargain got 20 years for attempted murder.

I was blind luck that day -After that we never stocked Glazer Safety Slugs Again.

However we will special order them as there are times when the round is necessary. We also do Executive security evaluations for individuals with real or  a perceived need for a security plan for his home and family. We had a husband and wife take a handgun class with us due to the wife having a stalker. This stacker would always confront her as she entered her garage when walking the dog. So her shot would generally be out the garage door, which left her neighbors window filled homes in the line of fire. For obvious reasons, in this case we did recommend the use of Glazer Safety Slugs.

If you enjoy the many gun magazines, please remember to take the information with a grain of salt. The same magazines doing evaluations are the same ones needing to sell advertising space the companies who they are evaluating.
